rooting deep and wide
Sara Vatore
So many clients have been navigating similar themes the last few weeks. There is a lot going on and it can feel pretty overwhelming and chaotic.
When this kind of energy swirls, it often takes us up and out of our bodies. Into our heads or into some form of checking out/dissociation, and/or autopilot.
One of the practices that I love being in is rooting my energy deep and wide.
When there is chaos, or I’m in the face of a trigger or a big emotion, rooting my energy down into the ground and widening the awareness out, helps bring me back into my body and invites in stability.
Trees are beautiful mirrors for us. They root down deep and wide, and at the same time are flexible, adaptable and have mobility in their trunk and branches.
The more we have containment and stability in our body/system, the easier it is to find our flow and flexibility within that foundation.
Start to notice the trees in your environment. Look up pictures of redwoods. Look up images of trees and roots. Pay attention to the trees in your yard and in your neighborhood.
This gets to be a resource for you.
To work with rooting deep and wide throughout your day or in a challenging moment:
Pause what you’re doing and bring yourself to a standing position.
Notice and sense your feet on the ground.
Bring awareness to your breath.
Notice how you can send your exhale down your whole body, into your feet.
Take a few breaths intentionally following the breath down, down, down.
See if you can send the breath beyond your feet, into the Earth.
Start to sense the energy widening beneath you.
Sense into the stability of your base (feet on the ground, legs and hips).
From this rooted place, can you notice how your upper torso can move and sway, in a supported way?
Stay here for a minute or two and allow yourself to feel the grounding.
