the act of claiming space

Sara Vatore

As I prepare to go away solo this coming weekend, I am reminded of the reasons behind prioritizing these kinds of spaces for myself.

In the past taking this kind of space, a commitment to my self without working or going away to “better” myself with a course or workshop, would cause so much guilt.

Stories about letting down my husband, my children or my business would flood my brain.

Honestly 8 years ago, it wouldn’t have been something I would have ever entertained. A foreign concept to think that I could actually take that much space and devote it to my self and my restoration.

However, these spaces are what is supporting me to hold as much as I do.

To show up for my children with the patience and intentional focus that I bring to our interactions.

To be able to dance between realms of adulting, parenting, homeschooling, running a business, tending to self, relationships, etc with as much grace as possible.

To play as many roles as I do: mother, wife, daughter, woman, self, spiritual being, friend, sibling, CEO, ancestor etc.

To coordinate all the pieces of running a business, a home, homeschooling, finances, scheduling, etc with a clear and focused mind (well, most of the time haha).

To have the capacity to navigate all the things without getting sick or blowing out my physical body.

I talk about the necessity of creating SPACE a LOT here.

The small moments, hours, afternoons that we can take to rebalance, reset, sense our self, our needs, etc.

However, committing to these longer chunks of time away solo is what has allowed my system to deeply recalibrate in a way taking an hour here and there can never give me.

Over the last few weeks, being able to look at my calendar and see this weekend blocked off has provided so much support and relief for my body and my mind.

In more challenging moments, emotions and interactions with my children, seeing the days strung together and approaching, allowed me to settle and helped me not to lose my shit.

I have learned that the act of claiming the space is just as important for my nervous system and sanity as the going away part.

In the past I often lost myself in the schedules and chaos of navigating all of the pieces. Especially at the end of the summer/ beginning of the school year–a time when my kids’ calendars took over my brain.

I’ve learned that when I map out more spaces for myself during these busier months ahead of time, I actually follow through and take the space. It’s on the calendar, so I have to do it.  A commitment to my self, in service to my self, my family, relationships, business and creativity.

Particularly when times are full, this is when we need to double down on our self care and self prioritization, so that we can have the energy and capacity to be with all the aspects of the unfolding.

Now is a good time to look at the upcoming months as we head towards fall and block off where you can take some space for yourself.

Because these longer solo spaces have played such an essential role in my healing and ability to thrive in all dimensions of my life, I have created an intentionally curated weekend retreat to support you in creating this kind of space for yourself:
