A friendly reminder for those who need to hear it:
You can’t expect yourself to be operating at your full potential if you’re neglecting or ignoring basic needs.
We have much less capacity to handle what life throws at us, if our body is not being listened to or cared for.
So many clients have come to me recently, frustrated with old patterns that felt resolved but seem to be resurfacing “out of nowhere.”
Upon closer reflection, they all have common themes.
When things get fuller in life or challenges come up, foundational ways that they’ve cared for themselves in the past, get put aside.
It tends to start small: going to bed a bit later at night, skipping the 5 minute morning meditation, not taking the break in the afternoon to get outside for a walk, forgetting to drink that glass of water.
These choices can stack up in our system and soon we’re feeling out of sorts and resorting back to old patterns.
As simple as it seems, going back to basics by checking in regularly with yourself to assess your needs and honoring what shows up, is how we can actually shift back into easeful rhythms that support our ability to handle complexities or when things feel full and challenging.
If you’ve been feeling frustrated recently about old patterns surfacing, or things feeling more challenging, I invite you to prioritize getting curious about your:
Sleep cycle
Nutrition
Water intake
Movement
Quality of connection with yourself, friends, family and spirit
How much touch are you receiving?
Time outside
Spaces alone
Time for play
Screen time
You can’t expect yourself to be patient, have energy, feel motivated and be clear headed, if these foundational themes are not being addressed.
Is there one area from the list that catches your attention that may need some tending to?
Recently I have been looking at my time in front of screens.
Because I have been in so much discomfort from COVID back in December and then my fall at the beginning of January, I have been spending WAY more time in front of screens, in order to distract myself from the truth in my body.
While this way was required for a while, the last couple of weeks haven't felt generative. I noticed a shift in my sleep, my patience level and fatigue in my eyes.
Recently I have been making more intentional choices away from screens and picking things that would support my body feeling good. MELTing my feet with a foot treatment, lying on my stomach with my head down, closing my eyes while I lay with a heating pad, taking a slow walk outside, getting in the shower, having a session with my somatic practitioner.
While it is uncomfortable to be in my body, spending more conscious time with her is allowing me to sense into the healing that is happening and the things that actually help me to feel good.
If you are looking for some support navigating being with what is showing up in your body these days, reach out. I have a few different ways we could work together that could be supportive depending on your needs. From virtual Somatic Coaching sessions, to hands-on healing sessions and 1-1 retreats, I’m happy to connect more if you’re called.
